WEEK 16 Fantasy Football: Top Ten Wide Receivers
The projected top ten wide receivers during championship week. Good Luck!
1. MARQUES COLSTON (NO): Colston has been Brees’ top target outside of Jimmy Graham and hes regained red zone opportunities as defenses focus on stopping the tight end. This week Colston faces divisional foes the Atlanta Falcons, ranked 17th against the pass. Pass defense has been their weakness all season long, allowing 19 touchdowns compared to just 9 on the ground. Brees will be chasing Marino’s record and this team is built on the pass.
2. CALVIN JOHNSON (DET): Megatron has been in beast mode all season, scoring in 9 games with two scores in five of those contests. While the Chargers are 6th vs. the pass, they have allowed no less than 65 yards and a score to opponents top receivers in three of their last four contests. MJD gashed them for 91 yards two weeks ago and considering he is their top threat we could make it all four contests. Stafford has returned to his normal self, spreading the ball around and finding his accuracy once again. Steve Johnson and the struggling Bills torched the Bolts for 116 yards in week 14 and Johnson is far from this Johnson’s talent.
3. STEVE SMITH (CAR): With Bucs top corner Aqib Talib out for the season, Smith should have no problem torching the Buccaneers 26th ranked secondary. Smiith is a master at finding the soft spot in zone coverage, something the Buccaneers will most likely employ consistently this week. The Bucs are being torched in all aspects of defense and last time these two teams met Cam Newton rushed for 3 scores and passed for one. Newton has settled in as a passer and should have no issues connecting with Smith here.
4. MIKE WILLIAMS (TB): Though there is little to warrant his position here given his disastrous season, Mike Williams totaled 93 yards the last time these two teams met. That was with Josh Johnson and not Josh Freeman at the helm. Carolina has allowed 22 scores through the air the season and the Buccaneers plan on going vertical early this week in order to keep up with Newton’s scoring attack. Though this is a very high ranking for Williams, the match up in comparison to other wide outs and his history bode well.
5. VINCENT JACKSON (SD): The Lions secondary has gone awfully soft the last few games, allowing top receivers to finish with 155, 65 and 119 yards with a touchdown each of their last three games. San Diego is on a hot streak and his first look is usually the speedy Jackson. Jackson posted 84 yards against a much more talented Baltimore secondary last week and should have no issues taking advantage of the Lions 16th ranked secondary. This could be one of the higher scoring games of the season, most of the damage being done in the pass game.
6. JORDY NELSON (GB): Nelson was all but stone walled last week against the Chiefs, ending up with just 29 yards on the day. The loss of Greg Jennings will allow teams to focus on Nelson but this week it really shouldn’t matter. The Bears sit at 27th vs. the pass this year and their hybrid Cover 2/Man defense is exactly what Aaron Rodgers needs after their first loss of the season. Make no mistake, the Packers will adjust and will beat the Bears only with the pass game. The Packers have been anemic in running the ball and it won’t get better here against one of the top rush defenses. Nelson, Finley, and Driver will all have a healthy amount of targets.
7./8. RODDY WHITE and JULIO JONES (WR’S): Both White and Jones have each scored at least once the past two weeks, with neither finishing with less than 84 yards receiving. Matt Ryan has finally figured out how to use both his weapons and this team is just now clicking on all cylinders offensively. Against the Saints 28th ranked secondary and given this will be a shootout, both guys have a high probability of each scoring for the third straight game.
9. WES WELKER (NE): Welker falls to 9th this week due to his recent funk the last two weeks. In comparison to what we’ve been accustomed to all year, Welker’s one touchdown on 127 yards receiving the last two games has returned him to mortality. Though the Dolphins are a miserable 25th against the pass, they have not allowed more than 89 yards to an opposing receiver the last 3 games. In those games, the top receiver has only scored once. Brady has taken to the duo of Hernandez and Gronkowski now that both are somewhat healthy, spreading the ball out more instead of relying on Welker.
10. SANTANA MOSS (WAS): Last but not least, Santana Moss rounds out the top ten in his match up with every receivers dream; the Minnesota Vikings secondary. The Vikes are 30th against the pass, allowing a sickening 31 scores through the air. Even Rex Grossman should have no issues connecting this week and Moss is likely to be his top target. Moss has caught a touchdown each of his last two games and this one will make it three.
