Top Ten Fantasy Baseball Outfield Prospects (1-5)
Mark J. Rebilas - US PRESSWIRE

By Adam McGill

Every year, more fantasy leagues are switching to dynasty leagues that include prospects.  Since this is looking to be the biggest year yet, be sure to check out my top ten rankings for prospects in the outfield:

1. Bryce Harper, WSH (19 years old) – It is still uncertain if Harper will join the Nats’ for opening day, but he is still without a doubt the best prospect at the position.  He has been crushing the ball out of ball parks since before he could drive, and the kid who was on Sports Illustrated as a sophomore in high school, finally gets to make his big league debut.  Scouts and fantasy owners alike have been talking about Harper for years, and it will be interesting to see what he can do over a bigger sample size.

2. Mike Trout, LAA (20 years old) – The “Fisherman” showed strong power last season with 5 homers in his first 123 big league at-bats.  Trout may start the season in the minors with aging outfielders Bobby Abreu, Tori Hunter, and Vernon Wells on the roster.  However, the youngster will eventually find his way in the starting lineup by the All-Star break and has the potential to hit .300 with 20 plus home runs in the near future.  He is a must have in dynasty leagues and is worth a late round pick in average mixed leagues.

3. Yonder Alonso, SD (24 years old) – With Alonso being traded to San Diego this off-season in the Matt Latos trade, it is all but assured that he will be the starter at first base since the team has no one else worthy enough to fill the hole left by departing starter, Anthony Rizzo.  However, if Alonso struggles early on, he will likely remain in the outfield for a couple weeks to gain experience.  Alonso is still a great prospect to target early in minor league drafts because of his ability to potentially cover multiple positions and his raw power to hit the ball over the fence.  He has crushed 5 home runs in only 88 career at-bats in the MILB, showcasing his power to both sides of the park.  Alonso may be one of the oldest prospects on this list, but he has perfected his swing in the minors over the last several years.  Fantasy owners’ should be assured that Alonso will be in the game somehow before next All-Star break and will eventually become eligible at both first base and outfield.

4. William Myers, KC (21 years old) – Myers is another prospect who still is unsure where he will fit in at a major league level.  He is all but written in as an outfielder, but some scouts still think that he can be utilized as catcher since he has experience in this position.  He swings a very level bat through the zone and will soon be featured in the Royals’ up and coming lineup.

5. Brett Jackson, CHC (23 years old) – Jackson remains one of the Cubs’ only remaining prospects in their farm system since the Matt Garza trade.  He crushed 20 home runs in the minors last season, but the team remains steadfast on their decision to be patient with their only prized prospect.  Jackson has hit a combined .292 average throughout his MILB career, so he should be a consistent threat on the bases.  “B-Jack” will find his way in the lineup sooner rather than later, as the Cubs’ offense needs some serious spark.
