Week 3 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Large Leagues
In fantasy baseball it is always important to have a strong draft each year, but it is just as critical to be actively searching the waiver wire. Free agent pickups can make or break a season, especially as the year begins to drag on. Below is the most recent compilation of my weekly fantasy baseball waiver wire pickups for 10-14 man leagues:
Large Leagues: 10-14 man leagues
C Ramon Hernandez, COL – Hernandez has always been known for his raw power from a backstop position, and he has already crushed 2 dingers on the year. This is his first year in Colorado, so the the hard-swinging catcher could easily hit 20 home runs in the most hitter friendly park in majors.
1B Chris Davis, BAL – Davis is currently leading all first basemen with a huge .353 batting average and has led all O’s batters. He seems to be swinging at a beach ball at the plate and fantasy owners should have them in their lineup while he is hot.
2B Jose Altuve, HOU – The 21-year old has registered 14 hits in his last 9 games and has quickly become a great free agent find in deeper leagues. He will be a great keeper option if he keeps it up and has no competition at the position, so he is certainly a prospect to monitor all year.
3B Mark Trumbo , LAA – The trumpets have sounded twice for Trumbo this season, while Pujols remains homer-less through the Angels’ first eleven games. Trumbo has showed great power playing at third base the last couple weeks, but he may eventually end up at DH or OF with the team’s offensive depth.
SS Ruben Tejada , NYM – Tejada has been surprising strong this season. He gained around 15 pounds of muscle in the off-season so he could bulk up in order to hold down the starting shortstop position following Jose Reyes’ departure to the Miami Marlins. Tejada has 6 extra base hits already and is batting .262 on the year. He is a great option to find on the waiver wire for an owner who is in desperate need of a shortstop.
OF Lucas Duda, NYM – Duda has surprised the Metropolitans with his raw power to both fields. He has already hit three home runs already and has earned a spot on New York’s roster. He may not hit for average, but he will be a huge asset in leagues that award heavily for longballs.
OF Josh Willingham, MIN – Willingham has hit safely in every game this year and is hitting a robust .389 already this year. He is hitting right in-between Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau in the Twins’ lineup and is one of the best-protected players in the majors. He has already hit five homers on the year and has become a great find in the outfield.
SP Lance Lynn , STL – Lynn started off the new season with an outstanding 2-0 record with 13 strikeouts and 3 walks in his 12 innings pitched. He is topping out at above 95 MPH on his fastball and has given the Cards another solid arm to lean on with Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright’s injury problems. Lynn will be a great sleeper pitcher to grab who will put up strong numbers from the back of a rotation.
SP Jeff Samardzija, CHC – Samardzija pitched a gem last week against the Nationals , as he went 8.2 innings pitched and struck out 8 batters while only walking one. “Sammy” has handled the transition well from a middle reliever to full-time starter and if he keeps it up he will be a permanent addition to any fantasy rotation.
RP Sergio Romo , SF – The news of Brian Wilson’s Tommy John surgery hit the fantasy baseball community hard, quickly making the closer who replaces him one of the hottest commodities this week in free agency. Romo will have plenty of chances to pick up saves with a stellar rotation in front of him and a rather lackluster offensive cast. If Romo remains the team’s closer, then he could easily rack up around 20-25 saves over the course of the rest of the year.
