Today marked the second ever Rant Sports 2012 fantasy football mock draft in which a select group of writers and managers participated in a live mock draft on ESPN. My pick was 10th overall in a draft of 10 and that tends to be the best spot in the draft because of the ability to make back-to-back picks.
From top to bottom my team is solid and here’s a look at the selections:
1. Philip Rivers QB
2. Rob Gronkowski TE
3. Eli Manning QB
4. Frank Gore RB
5. DeSean Jackson WR
6. Marques Colston WR
7. DeAngelo Williams RB
8. Malcolm Floyd WR
9. Randy Moss WR
10. Brandon Pettigrew TE
11. Seattle Seahawks D/ST
12. Philadelphia Eagles D/ST
13. Michael Floyd WR
14. Shane Vereen RB
15. David Akers K
16. Donald Driver WR
With having the last pick in the draft it meant taking some risks in drafting such as taking Rivers with the first pick as he struggled for the San Diego Chargers in 2011. I look for his interception numbers to decrease from 20 and be more in line with what he has done for his career average, which is at 13 and if the turnover struggles continue to haunt him I have Manning to take over.
Another calculated risk I took is on Jackson who last year had embroiled in talks of a contract extension, which contributed to a less than stellar season. Now that he has received what he wanted from the Eagles he should be back to the player who has the ability to score any time he touches the ball.
In my opinion it was surprising to find Moss still available as he’s one of the better sleeper picks and even though he did not play last season all reports from the San Francisco 49ers is that he’s looking like the Moss of old. Pettigrew is another sleeper pick as he quietly racked up 83 receptions for 777 yards and five touchdowns and he offers a great fill in for Gronkowski during the New England Patriots bye week.
No matter what fantasy sport draft I take part in when drafting I like to take highly touted rookies and with my 13th pick selected Michael Floyd of the Arizona Cardinals who will see plenty of passes his way with opposing teams focusing on Larry Fitzgerald.
The only weakness of my team is the lack of depth at running back, though I can increase the depth by dropping Vereen and picking up a better option in free agency or look to make a trade.
I’m looking forward to the season starting and it should a great experience.
