Fantasy Football: Waiver Wire Fool’s Gold for Week 6

Bob Donnan-US PRESSWIRE

Many fantasy analysts are quick to rattle off names of players to grab off the waiver wire after coming off an impressive week. Some prospects come from injury opportunities, goal line touches, and others due to mere fluke weeks. At this point in the fantasy season, you may need big time help in certain areas on your roster. In that case, claim away. However, if you are just taking a flyer on a waiver acquisition, here are three names to not waste your coveted claim on.

Golden Tate, Seattle Seahawks: Golden Tate is a very tempting waiver wire prospect coming into the sixth week and for good reason. The man who has a touchdown in the last three games. However, Tate hasn’t had more than three catches in any game this year, and those touchdowns only came in 2 of the 5 games played. Tate seems to be a very boom or bust wide receiver thus far, and with a young, struggling quarterback, Russell Wilson, let someone else gamble on this waiver wire pick up.

Tip- If you are looking for a wide out, look no farther than the Green Bay Packers. James Jones and Randall Cobb are prime for the pickin’ with Greg Jennings hurt.

Joel Dreessen, Denver Broncos: Is it time to give up hope on your current tight end and roll the dice with the Bronco’s second-string tight end, Joel Dreessen? In a word, no. Like Tate, he too is averaging a touchdown in the past three contests. Sure, Dreessen has an elite quarterback and recent success, so why not take a flyer on this tight end? For one, Jacob Tamme is still the number one option at a position not known for getting many targets. Adding to that point, Peyton Manning has a plethora of options at wide receiver and a solid pass catching running back in Willis McGahee. Second, Peyton historically likes to run the ball when he gets close to the end zone, which does not bode well for waiver wire prospect. Best to pass on this tight end.

David Wilson, New York Giants: The Giants have seen two running backs make a big splash this year in Andre Brown and now David Wilson. With Brown out due to a concussion, Wilson filled in nicely as Ahmad Bradshaw’s back up running back. Wilson is an explosive back that broke a 40-yard touchdown run that surely sparked the interest of fantasy owners. Unfortunately, Wilson is not a solid fantasy option due to a couple reasons. First, he only had two carries on Sunday. One just happened to be the aforementioned touchdown, which does not necessarily mean he will receive a workload worth trusting.

Second, if Brown doesn’t miss any time due to the concussion, he will certainly remain the second back on the depth chart. Third, head coachTom Coughlin has been known to hold a grudge for fumbles, which Wilson coughed up in Week 1 to the Dallas Cowboys. If you are in need of a running back, David Wilson is not the answer.

Tip- If you are in the market for a ball carrier, look for William Powell from the Arizona Cardinals to make an immediate impact in the absence of Beanie Wells and Ryan Williams.
