Coming off a Week 6 bye week, the Carolina Panthers have been game planning on how to limit Cam Newton’s turnovers. Newton has had a topsy-turvy season thus far, and has already lost 2 fumbles and thrown 5 interceptions. The Panther’s must limit their young quarterback’s turnovers to be successful against the Dallas Cowboys this week.
For fantasy owners, the disappointment in Newton hasn’t necessarily come from turnovers, but rather the lack of rushing touchdowns. Cam has only tallied 3 touchdowns on the ground this year. Owners reached for Newton in this year’s draft, as a quarterback that can produce rushing touchdowns is exponentially more valuable than one who only passes. Cam shined in the 2011 season, as he rushed for an amazing 14 touchdowns. Was it reasonable that owners were to think he’d duplicate that production? Probably not.
Fast forward to this week against the Cowboys. Newton will line up against a staunch defense that is number 1 in passing yards allowed (182 per game) and 8th in rushing yards allowed (103 per game). Yes, this is the first dual threat quarterback that Dallas has faced. But as you go through the huge improvements in the secondary and the front seven, I don’t see good things happening for Cam this week. The addition of outside linebacker, Bruce Carter, has added a ton of speed to their once sluggish linebacker core. Combined with the second year man, Sean Lee, these linebackers will surely contain Newton on the edges. If you have depth at quarterback on your fantasy roster, stay away from Cam Newton this week.
