Fantasy Football 2012: Top Week 12 Performers

1 of 7

Fantasy Football Top Players of Week 12

Ideally, the best fantasy football rosters win by having great overall contributions from every player on the roster. When some players struggle to score near their projected totals, players that exceed expectations and have great outputs help balance out a team’s lower scorers. To win on a frequent basis, top performances are what fuel teams to the top of their respective leagues’ standings.

In Week 12, there were many players who would fit the statements of overachiever and high-scorers. The top performers of this week range from elite options with favorable matchups to the unlikely sources of production. If owners have one or more of the players on this list, they typically put themselves in a great position to win their matchup.

Week 12 provided plenty of scoring opportunities. In total, 11 teams scored at least 28 points, meaning there were plenty of touchdowns to go around for quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends. This week, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco threw for over 350 passing yards, Washington Redskins running back Alfred Morris had over 100 rushing yards and a touchdown and wide receiver Mohamed Sanu had two touchdown receptions in the Cincinnati Bengals’ big win over the Oakland Raiders, yet none of these players make the list as Week 12 fantasy leaders. Here’s a look at the best of the best from this week in the NFL.

QB Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton – 37.44 points (at Philadelphia Eagles, 98% owned)

Week 12 statistics: 306 passing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, 52 rushing yards, 2 rushing touchdowns

Newton had something to prove on Monday night for his fantasy owners, as he has been a disappointment for the most part this season. He made up for it a little with his best performance of the season and arguably the best outing of his career, as he threw and ran for multiple touchdowns in the same game for the first time ever.

Honorable mentions: New England Patriots’ Tom Brady (at New York Jets, 100% owned, 31.42 points), Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Romo (vs. Redskins, 90% owned, 30.34 points), Redskins’ Robert Griffin III (at Cowboys, 98% owned, 30.34 points)

3 of 7

RB Bryce Brown, Philadelphia Eagles

Eagles RB Bryce Brown – 26.90 points (vs. Panthers, 37% owned)

Week 12 statistics: 178 rushing yards, 11 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns

Newton was not the only big scorer from the Monday night game. On the other side of the ball, Brown was huge for the Eagles, as he broke off touchdown scores from 65 and five yards out of the end zone. Unless LeSean McCoy suffers a setback, Brown’s breakout performance will likely be a one-time occurrence.

Honorable mentions: Houston Texans’ Arian Foster (at Detroit Lions, 100% owned, 23.70 points), Bengals’ BenJarvus Green-Ellis (vs. Raiders, 92% owned, 19.80 points), Patriots’ Shane Vereen (at Jets, 10% owned, 19.30 points)

4 of 7

WR Dez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys WR Dez Bryant – 25.10 points (vs. Redskins, 97% owned)

Week 12 statistics: 6 rushing yards, 145 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 fumble lost

Bryant has officially hit a hot streak this season as he put up another excellent showing for the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Collecting 145 receiving yards for the second straight game, he has overcome his slump from Weeks 7-9 and has benefited the most from Romo’s improved play at quarterback.

Honorable mentions: Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones (at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 100% owned, 20.70 points), Lions’ Calvin Johnson (vs. Texans, 100% owned, 20.00 points), Texans’ Andre Johnson (at Lions, 99% owned, 18.80 points)

5 of 7

RB/TE Charles Clay, Miami Dolphins

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

Miami Dolphins RB/TE Charles Clay – 14.40 points (vs. Seattle Seahawks, 0% owned)

Week 12 statistics: 137 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns

Owned in very few fantasy football leagues, Clay topped all other tight ends in fantasy points this week. Catching six passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, he came out of nowhere with this big game against a Seahawks defense that was pretty good at defending opposing tight ends. While he’s unproven, Clay could be someone that grows into a viable option given the lack of weapons in the passing game for Ryan Tannehill.

Honorable mentions: Jets’ Dustin Keller (vs. Patriots, 37% owned, 12.40 points), Minnesota Vikings’ Kyle Rudolph (at Chicago Bears, 52% owned, 11.50 points), Denver Broncos’ Jacob Tamme (at Kansas City Chiefs, 32% owned, 10.80 points)

6 of 7

K Rob Bironas, Tennessee Titans

Tennessee Titans K Rob Bironas – 14.00 points (at Jacksonville Jaguars, 27% owned)

Week 12 statistics: 4-for-5 field goals made (38, 40, 39, 33), 1 extra point made

Despite missing a field goal, Bironas was the top kicker this week, for he was the only player to make four field goals in Week 12. As the Titans’ primary source of scoring, Tennessee was able to move into field goal range often enough for him to be the top fantasy kicker of the week.

Honorable mentions: Cowboys’ Dan Bailey (vs. Redskins, 55% owned, 13.00 points), Buccaneers’ Connor Barth (vs. Falcons, 38% owned, 13.00 points), Bengals’ Mike Nugent (vs. Raiders, 19% owned, 12.00 points), Eagles’ Alex Henery (vs. Panthers, 18% owned, 12.00 points)

New England Patriots team defense

Ed Mulholland-US PRESSWIRE

Patriots team defense – 25.00 points (at Jets, 87% owned)

Week 12 statistics: 17 points allowed, 2 sacks, 1 interception, 4 fumble recoveries, 2 defensive touchdowns

The highest-scoring team defense in the week for a second straight time, the Patriots dominated their opposition once again in an overwhelming fashion. Last week, it was the Indianapolis Colts. This week, the Jets felt the wrath of the Patriots defense, as they recovered four fumbles and scored two touchdowns. No defense in the NFL has been better these past six weeks than New England.

Honorable mentions: St. Louis Rams team defense (at Arizona Cardinals, 34% owned, 23.00 points), San Francisco 49ers team defense (at New Orleans Saints, 99% owned, 21.00 points), Cleveland Browns team defense (vs. Pittsburgh Steelers, 21% owned, 21.00 points)
