This week brings the beginning of the playoffs for fantasy football players around the country, and that means making decisions and changes all weekend long. There is one player that I wouldn’t be starting at all this weekend in any fantasy league, and that is Ryan Mathews. Mathews has an awful matchup on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are going to make life miserable for Mathews and the whole San Diego Chargers offense.
Mathews has been struggling all season long, and with having Philip Rivers at the quarterback position producing the most turnovers in the National Football League over the past two seasons, teams are clamping down more on the running game for San Diego. I would be looking elsewhere if you can to find a different running back to replace Mathews this week. There are running backs like BenJarvus Green-Ellis or Vick Ballard who should have much better numbers than what Mathews will finish with on Sunday.
Mathews should have a better matchup next week at home against the Carolina Panthers but if you are a fantasy owner, you have to get to next week first before thinking too hard about it. If I was looking ahead to next year, the value of Mathews will come a lot from whether the Chargers have a new coaching staff or not, and if the offensive plan is changed. Mathews could be way down on the running back rankings for next year’s draft just like he is way down for running backs this week. The time has come to bench Mathews.
