The beginning of the playoffs was this week for fantasy football players throughout the country and with that came making tough choices on whom to start or sit. If there was one player that got started that had a day that didn’t help much, it was the Baltimore Ravens’ Torrey Smith. Smith finished with just one catch for 21 yards as Joe Flacco focused more on Anquan Boldin than Smith in Baltimore’s win over the Washington Redskins.
Smith was targeted just three times as well in the game, which couldn’t make owners real happy who had decided to start him on the road against the No. 2 best fantasy defense for wide receivers. It didn’t help matters when Flacco kept throwing touchdown passes on each throw he made and didn’t have to move the ball down the field with several short throws which may have opened it up for Smith more. Smith has a terrible matchup next week when the Denver Broncos come in followed by the New York Giants so Smith’s numbers may not rise the rest of the season.
I would be looking for someone else to start over Smith for the rest of the season in my opinion but if you are already looking ahead to next season now, Smith is still a middle-round pick likely in about the seventh or eighth round. Smith is the kind of player that can be sink or swim anyway and this week was definitely one of those sink weeks. The owners of Smith are probably already in 2013 draft mode.
