There are many people who are going into the New Year looking far ahead to fantasy baseball in 2013. Those people are already planning parties for draft day and are doing mock drafts already to get ready. If you are looking for a keeper candidate or just someone you can stash on your bench for later in the season, I encourage you to take a look at Mike Olt.
Olt is trapped behind Adrian Beltre at third base for the Texas Rangers but did play several games at first base this past season and with Michael Young now traded away, it could open up some playing time. Olt reminds me a lot of another former Texas prospect in Chris Davis, who had a big swing but had holes in that swing. When Olt makes contact though, good things usually happen. Olt could be in line for 250-300 at-bats with a stockpile of young players in Texas and not enough places to put them.
If I’m ranking Olt for the 2013 draft, I would have Olt in the last two or three rounds but keep an eye on what happens in Texas. There are openings where Olt could play and maybe even in the outfield but it would be more likely that Olt gets traded around the trading deadline for help in Texas. That is when you will be happy that you drafted Olt for your team and he can be plugged right away into your lineup. It is never too early to get started on fantasy preparation especially if you are stuck in the snow in the northern part of the country.
