Fantasy Football 2013: Looking Ahead; Dwayne Bowe

Jason Bridge-USA TODAY Sports

He may be under the radar and he may play for a bad team. However, I will continue to believe that Dwayne Bowe is one of the best wide receivers in all of football. He has the size, speed, hands and raw athleticism to be great. And next year he may have another thing.

A new team.

In 2013, Bowe will become a free agent. The Kansas City Chiefs can franchise tag him for a second time, extend his contract or go elsewhere. That is uncertain but all signs are pointing towards Bowe wearing a different uniform come next year. A large contract will surely be on Bowe’s wish list, something the Chiefs may not plan on giving him.

Bowe has had guys such as Damon Huard Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen and Matt Cassel throw him the football throughout his career. The thing is, he has still put up elite wideout numbers, catching 415 balls for 5,728 yards and 39. Assuming he stays healthy, could you imagine the type of production he would have with an actual quarterback? Ok, maybe that was a bit mean, but it is true. If the Chiefs lose on Sunday they will lock up the 1st pick in the 2013 draft. Many believe Geno Smith will be their choice. If Bowe stays in Kansas City, Smith would surely increase his fantasy value, but it’s very difficult to tell how Smith will fare in the NFL.

But what if Bowe signed with another team?

Literally almost any other quarterback in football will be better than the array of disappointments from the Chiefs. In my eyes, Bowe is as talented as almost any wideout in football. The reason his fantasy value isn’t appealing is due to the quarterback conundrum throughout his career. He is a very physical player who provides quarterbacks with a big time target in the red zone.

Keep an eye out on Bowe’s situation this off-season, as well as many other potential free agents.
