Fantasy Football 2012: Best Kickers Review

Fantasy
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The 2012 fantasy football season featured plenty of big seasons by kickers. From elite players at the position who have put up big numbers week in and week out to newcomers who will likely be big stars in 2013, the kicker position was rather predictable this season. While some youngsters came into the fold with their respective teams and had bursts of production, other veterans fizzled at times and gave way to less likely fantasy options on non-playoff teams. Using a standard scoring system, here’s a look at the top kickers of the 2012 fantasy football season.

Fantasy Football 2012 Honorable Mentions at Kicker:

10. David Akers – 142.00 points (1 0-19 FGM, 8 20-29 FGM, 11 30-29 FGM, 7 40-49 FGM, 2 50+ FGM, 44 PAT made)

9. Matt Prater – 144.00 points (1 0-19 FGM, 7 20-29 FGM, 10 30-29 FGM, 5 40-49 FGM, 3 50+ FGM, 55 PAT made)

8. Connor Barth – 147.00 points (0 0-19 FGM, 7 20-29 FGM, 3 30-29 FGM, 12 40-49 FGM, 6 50+ FGM, 39 PAT made)

7. Justin Tucker – 150.00 points (0 0-19 FGM, 8 20-29 FGM, 8 30-29 FGM, 10 40-49 FGM, 4 50+ FGM, 42 PAT made)

4 (tied). Jason Hanson, Detroit Lions – 154.00 points

Season statistics: 1 0-19 FGM, 3 20-29 FGM, 10 30-29 FGM, 16 40-49 FGM, 2 50+ FGM, 38 PAT made

One of the league’s most dependable kickers in his 21 seasons in the league, Hanson had his best fantasy season in nearly 10 years with 32 made field goals. Despite the Lions’ eight-game losing streak to end the season, he still received a nice number of field goal opportunities thanks to his team’s above-average offense.

4 (tied). Lawrence Tynes, New York Giants

4 (tied). Lawrence Tynes, New York Giants – 154.00 points

Season statistics: 0 0-19 FGM, 11 20-29 FGM, 14 30-29 FGM, 7 40-49 FGM, 1 50+ FGM, 46 PAT made

The leading scorer for most of the season, Tynes’ production fizzled out as the Giants played themselves out of playoff contention. Making mostly short field goals and extra points this season, he was a high-volume kicker who finished the year with 33 of 39 field goals made.

3. Matt Bryant, Altanta Falcons

3. Matt Bryant, Atlanta Falcons – 161.00 points

Season statistics: 1 0-19 FGM, 8 20-29 FGM, 10 30-29 FGM, 10 40-49 FGM, 4 50+ FGM, 44 PAT made

Another reliable kicker who was among the top fantasy kickers at the start of the season, Bryant made multiple field goals in 10 games. Given the Falcons’ successes on offense, particularly in the passing game, he was able to play at a high level for fantasy owners every week.

2. Stephen Gostkowski, New England Patriots – 166.00 points

Season statistics: 0 0-19 FGM, 8 20-29 FGM, 10 30-29 FGM, 9 40-49 FGM, 2 50+ FGM, 66 PAT made

Like Brant, Gostkowski was one of the most-drafted kickers this season given the Patriots’ elite offense. Scoring double-digit fantasy points in 10 games this season, he will once again be a top kicker in 2013.

1. Blair Walsh, Minnesota Vikings

1. Blair Walsh, Minnesota Vikings – 168.00 points

Season statistics: 0 0-19 FGM, 10 20-29 FGM, 8 30-29 FGM, 7 40-49 FGM, 10 50+ FGM, 36 PAT made

A sixth-round draft pick this year, Walsh arguably had one of the best seasons for a kicker in history. Making 10 field goals from beyond 50 yards and only missing three kicks all season long, he bailed out the average Vikings offense with his strong leg and carried fantasy teams with his many field goal makes.
