Seven games are set to be played around the NHL on Friday evening, with a handful of significant headlines that affect both real and fantasy hockey. So, what’s making news?
Gabriel Landeskog placed on IR
Man, I really hate to see such a promising, young player go down. The Avalanche’s 19-year old (yes 19) captain has been placed on IR after suffering head and leg injuries during Saturday’s loss to the San Jose Sharks. The leg issues aren’t keeping Landeskog off the ice, as much as the head injury. Concussions are an extremely gray area in sports, especially hockey, so Landeskog will be out indefinitely. It is a heartbreaking loss to an already struggling team.
From a fantasy perspective (because that’s what we do here) a few guys come to mind when thinking of filling the void.
– Sam Gagner, Edmonton Oilers: At least one point in every game this season (8 on the year).
– Cody Hodgson, Buffalo Sabres: Playing on a red hot first line with Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville.
– Daniel Briere, Philadelphia Flyers: Finally 1oo% healthy, will join Claude Giroux on the team’s top line.
Zach Boychuk to skate with Malkin, Neal
The Pittsburgh Penguins newly acquired forward could see ice time alongside the terrific Evgeni Malkin and sniper James Neal. Boychuk is a speedy and brave forward, who will clearly benefit playing with the likes of Malkin. It’s a tremendous opportunity for him and if he continues to stay on this line, he could see a major boost in his fantasy value, forcing owners to take notice. It’ll be interesting to see how this trio performs.
