Fantasy Hockey: Nail Yakupov Already Showing Fantasy Value

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

Last year when the Edmonton Oilers were able to grab Ryan Nugent-Hopkins first overall, the center immediately came in and had an impact for fantasy hockey owners.

However, the team was lucky enough to strike gold twice, as they managed to grab right-winger, Nail Yakupov, with the first overall selection in the 2012 NHL Draft.

The young winger has already shown amazing fantasy potential this season. He has registered one point in each of his last six games by scoring three goals and handing out three more.

Yakupov is an extremely versatile option on the right side. He is one of the only right-wingers that is predominately left-handed, so he is able to take a shot from anywhere on the ice. It is also interesting that he once wanted to play soccer for Chelsea as opposed to playing in the NHL, but it appears he made the right call.

The forward has proven that he can score, pass the puck, and is not afraid to get physical. He has quietly amassed five goals, three assists, and eight total points in his first professional season. Many people thought he would disappear among the long list of fantasy wingers in 2013, but he has certainly become a starter in any league with more than 10 owners.

Yakupov may not be a fantasy All-Star just yet, but the Russian will be a hot commodity in any dynasty league moving forward.
