Vanek has quietly racked up a NHL-best 23 points this season. He has only played in 12 games, but has scored 11 goals and added 12 assists. He is posting a jaw-dropping 1.92 points per contest and has truly been the most valuable player in all of fantasy hockey.
Vanek is also ranked seventh in shots on goal with 46. He is finally taking shots on net, which is something Buffalo fans have been screaming at the television about for years. It is promising to see him riffle shots at the net, because after all, he can’t score if he isn’t shooting.
The increase in shots has caused Vanek’s scoring numbers to go through the roof and his league-leading 12 goals is more than Anze Kopitar (four), Evgeni Malkin (three), and Claude Giroux (three) combined.
The 29-year-old wasn’t even ranked inside of the top 70 players in Yahoo hockey leagues this winter, but Vanek has completely surpassed all expectations of him this year. The Austrian has made thousands of owners regret passing on him this season. He is playing like a man possessed and is seemingly in the middle of any scoring series the Sabres have.
Vanek will continue to be an elite fantasy option on the outside throughout the season. He is having a fantasy impact every game and will continue to rack up points for the remainder of the fantasy season.
Considering where he was drafted and that the winger is shockingly leading the entire league in points, Vanek has to be the midseason fantasy MVP.
