In many fantasy baseball dynasty leagues, St. Louis Cardinals SP Shelby Miller has been one of the most popular prospects for quite some time. He has been tearing up the minors for years, only to give fantasy owners little to no production.
Miller is currently battling for the final spot in the rotation, though, so fantasy owners may not have to wait much longer. The first four spots belong to Adam Wainwright, Jamie Garcia, Jake Westbrook, and Lance Lynn. However, Miller will be battling Joe Kelly for the fifth and final spot this spring.
On Tuesday, Miller started a game against the Miami Marlins and took another step towards locking up the final spot. While it may not have been the best competition, the rookie still had another huge spring outing. He got through four scoreless innings and only allowed one hit. He also had three strikeouts and retired the last 11 batters he faced.
It was Miller’s second win of the spring, and you have to assume that this game will assure him the fifth spot in the rotation. He is holding opposing hitters to a .234 batting average and has shown amazing strikeout potential for a youngster.
Miller’s ERA may be a little high at 4.63, but the kid is still finding his groove and is experimenting with several different pitches. Don’t read too much into his high ERA, because most young pitchers struggle during the spring.
It is only a matter of time until Miller is striking out major league batters. If you own him in a dynasty league, be patient because his time is coming.
