The 2013 Valero Texas Open is another tournament without some of the bigger names on the tour, mainly Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley, and Brandt Snedeker.
However, the one big name that will be attending the event is Rory McIlroy. Rory was a very late addition to the field, but the former number one ranked golfer in the world needs to get back on his game. Expect to see McIlroy almost every weekend until he starts playing some solid rounds of golf.
Like most tournaments, there will be a large number of sleepers in this one as well. Lesser-known golfers like Charlie Wi, Brendon de Jonge, Jimmy Walker, Billy Horschel, and Cameron Tringale will all be great fantasy options to look for outside of the big names. Just because the player may not be in a Nike commercial, doesn’t mean he can’t have a solid fantasy round.
To help you in your drafts, here are the top 10 fantasy golfers for the 2013 Texas Valero Open in San Antonio this week:
10. Ben Curtis
Ben Curtis – Curtis won the VTO last year with a score of nine under, so expect the veteran to be a popular pick.
9. Fredrik Jacobson
Fredrik Jacobson – Jacobson has finished inside the top-25 in five consecutive tournaments. The Swede will be worth keeping an eye on this week in Texas.
8. Zach Johnson
Zach Johnson – Johnson has won here twice since 2008 and will be a great sleeper pick to target.
7. Rory McIlory
Rory McIlroy – Rory was a late addition to the field, so he clearly knows that he needs to get some more work in. He will start turning things around sooner rather than later and is worth grabbing after the first five guys come off the board.
6. Jim Furyk
Jim Furyk – The Ferocious Furyk has finished inside the top-17 in three of his last five PGA appearances. He has also made each cut this year, so expect another strong showing from Furyk this weekend.
5. Brendon de Jonge
Brendon de Jonge – BDJ has cracked the top-11 in two of his last four tourneys.
4. Justin Leonard
Justin Leonard – JL has had great success here in the past. He won it three times since 2000 and will be one of the most sought after veterans in San Antonio.
3. Ian Poulter
Ian Poulter – Poulter has never played in San Antonio before, but he is one of the best international players attending the event. He never three-putts and will appreciate the fast greens in the Longhorn state.
2. Charl Schwartzel
Charl Schwartzel – Schwartzel has been on fire this year and has cracked the top-16 in three of his four stateside tourneys.
1. Matt Kuchar
Matt Kuchar – Kuchar has five finishes inside the top-16 already this year. He is the hottest golfer on the tour right now, so make sure he is the number one fantasy pick this week.
