On Opening Day, Axford allowed a solo-home run in the 5-4 win over the Colorado Rockies. It was Axford’s first blown save of the year and will definitely not be his last.
Surprisingly, Axford’s week would get even worse. During his last two appearances, Axford was tagged for seven hits and a disgusting five earned runs. The closer is literally falling apart this year and his fastball is nowhere near the velocity he has been accustomed to.
With Axford pitching as miserably as he is, it is only a matter of time until the team gives middle reliever, Jim Henderson, the ball in the ninth inning.
Henderson is a 30-year-old, righty and unlike Axford, has not allowed an earned run through three full innings of work. Henderson has shown much better control, and more than anything else, hasn’t lost confidence in his fastball. Axofrd has simply been useless this fantasy season, making Henderson a possible steal off the wavier wire.
Henderson seems like the obvious replacement for Axford and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the move as early as next week. Henderson is the fantasy closer you want in Milwaukee, so grab him now while you still can.
