THE PLAYERS Championship is one of the toughest fantasy tournaments to read each year. TPC-Sawgrass is as unpredictable as it is beautiful, so almost every golfer has a shot to win this weekend. Don’t fall in love with the big names, because the relative unknown golfers could be just as valuable.
To help you draft this week, here are the top 20 fantasy golfers for the 2013 PLAYERS Championship.
20. Webb Simpson
Webb Simpson – Simpson has missed the cut at Sawgrass in three of the last four years. He will be a risky fantasy pick this week.
19. Bill Haas
Bill Haas – After four straight top-25 finishes, Haas missed the cut at the Quail Hollow last weekend.
18. Rickie Fowler
Rickie Fowler – Fowler has been somewhat erratic recently, as he only has one top-10 finish in his last eight tournaments.
17. Keegan Bradley
Keegan Bradley – Bradley’s 35th place finish at The PLAYERS in 2012 was a career-best, but he hasn’t exactly been on the tour very long. Sawgrass is one of the toughest courses on the tour, so it will likely take another couple years for Bradley to crack the top-10.
16. D.A. Points
D.A. Points – Points has two top-16 finishes in the last two weeks alone.
15. Jason Day
Jason Day – Day finished sixth at the PLAYERS last year, and the 25-year-old is in the middle of a breakout season.
14. Matt Kuchar
Matt Kuchar - Kuchar won last year at Sawgrass with a score of 13 strokes under par.
13. Brandt Snedeker
Brandt Snedeker – Sneeds has missed the cut at Sawgrass in four straight attempts. However, he still has six top-10 finishes this season and will be a decent sleeper pick.
12. Graeme McDowell
Graeme McDowell – McDowell has been relaxing ever since his win at the RBC Heritage last month. Many people may overlook GMD this week, so watch him closely during fantasy drafts.
11. Henrik Stenson
Henrik Stenson – Stenson has racked up two top-10 finishes in the last four tournaments. Now factor in that won it in 2009 and Stenson will be a very popular pick this week.
10. Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson – Mickelson hasn’t finished inside the top-10 at Sawgrass since winning it back in 2007. He will still be a popular pick, but his recent struggles on the course will keep him from being a top-five fantasy option.
9. Sergio Garcia
Sergio Garcia – Garcia has cracked the top-17 in every tournament he has played in this season, except the API in which he withdrew. When Garcia decides to play in a tournament, he always shows up.
8. Rory McIlory
Rory McIlroy – McIlroy has never made the cut at Sawgrass, but is finally turning his season around. Look for this to be the weekend he finally has a strong couple rounds in Pointe Verde.
7. Lee Westwood
Lee Westwood – Westwood has finished inside the top-10 in three straight stateside tournaments.
6. Nick Watney
Nick Watney – Watney finished fourth at Sawgrass in 2011 and 17th in 2010. He heads down to Florida having made three consecutive top-15 appearances, making him one of the safest picks this weekend.
5. Justin Rose
Justin Rose - JR has cracked the top-25 in every tournament this year.
4. Luke Donald
Luke Donald – Donald finished sixth in 2012 and fourth in 2011 at Sawgrass.
3. Adam Scott
Adam Scott – Scott is coming off a win at the Masters and will be playing with more confidence than anyone else in Florida.
2. Jim Furyk
Jim Furyk – TPC-Sawgrass is Furyk’s home course, so expect him to have a couple very strong rounds this week.
1. Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods – Despite people making a big deal about Woods being penalized two strokes during the Masters, he has still cracked the top-four in three straight tourneys.
