2013 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Watch: John Danks
It’s been over a year since Chicago White Sox SP John Danks last pitched in the majors, but on Friday he will make his return and should immediately be on the radar of 2013 fantasy baseball owners in need of pitching help.
Danks last pitched on May 19 of last season and looked great, pitching 6.1 shutout innings. Just as it looked as he was turning the corner in a season he had struggled to start, he was placed on the disabled list a few days later with a left shoulder strain that ended up requiring surgery. It’s been a while, but Danks is ready and he gets a nice, easy transition back to the bigs as he will face the Miami Marlins‘ last-ranked offense Friday.
Throughout his career, Danks has been a good but inconsistent pitcher who could strike out 10 in eight shutout innings one night then allow seven runs in four innings the next. A lot of that stems from control issues that come and go, and one concern heading into Friday is his 14:12 K:BB in his three-game rehab stint at AAA.
Danks is a guy available in over 95 percent of ESPN leagues who has a guaranteed rotation spot and more of a successful history than others available on the wire. It’s not every day you can add a pitcher who had a WAR of 3.0 or higher in three of his four full seasons. The best option would be to put him on your watch list and see how he fares in his first start, but if you’re desperate in deep leagues for some pitching help, grabbing him for his start against Miami isn’t the biggest risk in the world.
