Which Moves Should be Made?

moves
Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

We are now past Memorial Day and like MLB teams do at this point of the season, fantasy baseball owners need to decide what they want to do going forward. There are players who have been epic disappointments so far this season and others who have surprised everyone. I have my top 10 players who will be discussed a lot in trade talks between fantasy owners before now and the trading deadline.

I know with my fantasy teams that I have made the mistake of sticking with some players for way too long and it is costing me. I’m sure there are others like me out there, but you have to cut some of those players loose at one point before the season is lost. The time has come to begin making moves to get ready for the postseason since many leagues are probably nearing their halfway point within the next week or two.

You want to have the players who can lead you to a championship on your roster now before their value goes any higher or drops any lower. There are two pitchers sprinkled into this conversation because they are just as important as hitters. I just don’t see as many pitchers who are candidates for my list as opposed to the batters. I hope that you are able to either trade for some of these players or get rid of a couple of them moving forward because some players just can’t be this good or this bad all season long. Here are my top 10 fantasy baseball trade candidates.

10. Trade Vernon Wells

Wells will keep his starting job for now, but when Curtis Granderson returns to town, it’s time to trade him away for another starting outfielder. The ceiling has been hit by Wells in my opinion.

9. Trade John Buck

Buck has been great for people looking for home runs from their catcher position. The batting average is too low for my liking and I don’t think Buck can keep this up all season. It’s time to trade him.

8. Trade for Yovani Gallardo

It has been a rough start for Gallardo with a 3-5 record. There is no reason to believe that he will get any worse and I would be making a play to trade for him right away.

7. Trade Nate McLouth

McLouth continues to impress, but I’m fearful that he is still sitting against left-handed starters. This is a very tricky decision because he could fall off the cliff at any point. If you can get something of value, it may be worth trading McLouth away.

6. Trade Andre Ethier

Ethier’s value seems to be falling every day. If he gets traded himself, his value will go up again. At this point, however, I would find a way to rid myself of Ethier on my roster.

5. Trade for Cole Hamels

Hamels may be 1-8 on the season, but there is no way that you trade him away. I would be trying to acquire him if there was an owner who is freaked out about his record.

4. Trade Evan Gattis

Gattis has been a beast, but the problem lays in the fact that Brian McCann will get more playing time. I would be trying to trade Gattis while his value is still high.

3. Trade for Miguel Montero

Montero has been hitting under .200 most of the year. It will change sooner than later. If you can get him, I would do it.

2. Trade for or Pick Up David Freese

Freese has struggled since returning from injury. He is finally hitting home runs now though, and could be turning things around. It may be worth trying to make a move.

1. Trade for B.J. Upton

There are many ways to look at Upton’s value the rest of the season. He can’t possibly be this bad all year or can he? He is a great buy-low candidate if you think he can rebound.
