2013 Fantasy Football IDP Profile: DE Geno Atkins

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Since fantasy football IDP leagues have become popular, owners have been inclined to lock onto defensive ends. The position consistently racks up more sacks and tends to be around the ball more often.

However, in recent seasons, there have been a dramatic increase in the value of defensive tackles in IDP leagues. Defensive tackles used to be completely avoided in IDP drafts on a yearly basis, but the position has once again become worthy of fantasy consideration.

One of these middlemen to target this season is Cincinnati Bengals DT Geno Atkins.

The former Georgia standout ranked sixth in the entire NFL last year with 12.5 sacks. Atkins has quietly amassed 100 tackles and 20 sacks over his last two seasons, while earning a trip to two consecutive Pro Bowls (2011-12). He has a relentless motor and the 25-year-old has matured into one of the best pass rushers in all of fantasy.

Additionally, Atkins has not missed a game in his three-year career. The former fourth round pick has become one of the leaders of Cincy’s defense and the fact that he is on the field every Sunday speaks volumes to the rest of the team.

Just because Akins is a defensive tackle, doesn’t mean that he isn’t a bonafide defensive lineman in IDP leagues. He should be a top-10 pick defensive lineman this summer, so make sure to draft him accordingly.
