San Francisco 49ers 2013 Fantasy Football Defense Preview

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers defense has been a Fantasy darling the past few years. Fast, aggressive and opportunistic, they’ve been just what you’ve been looking for out of a Fantasy defense.

Last year, they were second in the league in scoring defense and middle of the pack in getting turnovers. Things should be much of the same this year, if not even better in the turnover department.

The 49ers bring back one of the best pass-rushing combos in the NFL with Justin Smith and Aldon Smith. Both Smiths come off the edge as good as anyone in the league. Aldon was second in the league with 19.5 sacks last year, a number that would normally get him the sack title.

The defense starts with that pressure, then finishes with playmakers at linebacker and defensive back. Navarro Bowman and Patrick Willis are the best middle linebacker tandem in the league. They patrol the middle and are excellent in stopping the run.

The defensive backs are anchored by ball-hawking corner Carlos Rodgers and bolstered by the addition of first-round draft pick Eric Reid at safety. Reid, brought in to fill the void left by departing free agent Dashon Goldson, brings an additional playmaker to the table.

The San Francisco defense will be fast and aggressive again this year. They’re just what you want out of your Fantasy Football defense. They don’t give up big plays, but they can make them.

Defenses in Fantasy Football are a gamble. You never really know what you’re going to get. The 49ers defense has been good in previous years, and should be a solid choice for your team again in 2013
