By now, you’re well aware that Andre Brown has a broken leg that will keep him out of action for the New York Giants for at least four to six weeks. This has rocketed David Wilson high on a lot of people’s draft boards. If you haven’t drafted yet and you were high on Wilson to begin with then hearing speculation about him getting goal line carries probably has you pawing affectionately at his picture in your Fantasy mag.
Is Wilson the only player affected by Brown’s injury?
The reality here is that a pigeon pecking at a cigarette butt in the middle of the road has a better chance of stopping a New York City Bus than David Wilson has trying to block a Linebacker Blitzing off the corner. Time and time again you see that Wilson has no natural ability for pass blocking. At the same time, we also see that Head Coach Tom Coughlin hangs the fate of the Giants on the arm of Eli Manning.
Even when healthy Brown ran like he was stepping in postholes. His biggest value wasn’t catching on third downs; it was staying in to block on third downs. With Brown out of the lineup Coughlin isn’t going to simply watch an old episode of Full House and Wilson all that matters is that you try your best at pass blocking!
What probably happens here is that Offensive Coordinator Kevin Gilbride is going to look at his already wounded and wobbly offensive line with rookie Justin Pugh playing Tackle and he’s going to call a Max-Protect scheme that calls for Brandon Myers to stay home and block. I know a lot of people were high on Myers as a sleeper candidate this year but this might completely tank his value if he’s just the third down blocker.
If I’m right and Myers is called on to be more of a blocking Tight End, it means extra reps and packages for the slot receiver. Reuben Randle has spent the preseason playing in Victor Cruz spot while Cruz has been out with an injured heel. Once he returns Randle should be moved over to the slot, this combined with Hakeem Nicks durability questions moves Randle into must grab pick in the last five rounds.
While David Wilson’s value goes up in all scoring formats, there are ripples in the Giants’ Fantasy pond that you should take into account in your Fantasy draft and early on in the waiver wire.
