Darren Sproles Is An Underrated Option At Running Back This Year
Darren Sproles has been one of the most underrated fantasy football running backs the last few years. The diminutive back has put up big numbers, especially for those in PPR leagues.
Sproles’ fantasy reputation suffers because receiving, third-down type backs have traditionally been disappointments in fantasy football. Touchdowns play the biggest role in racking up fantasy points, and smaller backs typically don’t get the goal line touches.
Well, that theory doesn’t hold up very well anymore. First, there just aren’t that many traditional, down-hill runners left in the league. If you can get your hands on one, that’s great. But, chances are you were lucky to get yourself one classic franchise back this year, certainly not two.
Second, receiving backs are becoming more and more involved in their team’s red-zone offense. With defenses getting better every year at stopping the run down by the goal line, spreading them out and getting the ball in a playmaker’s hands is now your best bet to score touchdowns instead of settling for field goals.
The New Orleans Saints have several options at running back this season, but none of them are very appealing. Mark Ingram doesn’t have breakaway speed and always seems to get injured, and we know Pierre Thomas isn’t going to breakout anytime soon.
The Saints are a passing team, not a running team. They use the weapons at their disposal as good as any team in the league. Sean Payton is an offensive mastermind, and he will find a way to get the ball in Sproles’ hands this year.
He may not be the most exciting choice for your fantasy football team this year, but if you give Sproles a shot, you’ll be glad you did.
