2013 Fantasy Football Bubble: Vick Ballard Is Bench Option Worth Keeping

Thomas J. Russo-USA TODAY Sports

As you begin to deal with injuries and work the waiver wire in your fantasy football leagues, there are certain players out there that you wonder, “Is this guy worth keeping?” There are some players, that after Week 1, look as though they may not be as big of a force as owners originally thought. On the flip side, others are making owners wonder if they could hold value eventually.

One particular player that seems to be a mystery to some folks right now is Indianapolis Colts running back Vick Ballard. With the Colts bringing in former New York Giants back Ahmad Bradshaw, many are a little hesitant to hold onto Ballard or even insert him into their lineup. Here’s the one thing to remember: Bradshaw is coming off another injury.

He’s never historically lasted an entire season at full health. Sure, he may have played in every game, but does that mean he was completely healthy? Absolutely not. Bradshaw seems to get easily banged up, that’s what I’m getting at.

Ballard ran for 63 yards on 13 carries Sunday, and the Colts beat the Oakland Raiders. Bradshaw, meanwhile, totaled 26 yards on seven carries. As he is continually worked into the lineup, Ballard’s carries may steadily decrease. However, it looks like Ballard will at least have a role in the offense on a weekly basis.

With the uncertainty of Bradshaw being able to handle the full load of carries early on and the solid play from Ballard, I would advise you to hold onto the soon-to-be backup. It is almost guaranteed that Bradshaw will find himself a little beat up here and there at times, and Ballard will be a perfect fill in.
