Time to Sell High on Giovani Bernard

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Giovani Bernard just had a huge fantasy night, but owners should not take this as a sign to start him. Instead it should be seen as a chance to get rid of him. Look, Giovani Bernard is very talented and has huge upside, but as of right now he is not a viable fantasy starter. While he had two touchdowns, he only carried the ball eight times. Last week he carried it four times. Furthermore, BenJarvis Green-Ellis is still getting the goal line carries, and until that changes Bernard’s touchdown potential will be capped. The Cincinnati Bengals  aren’t giving Bernard more carries,  so he is simply not ready to start.

Yet, with his speed and great hands, many are very excited about him. So look to make a trade. Giovani Bernard may turn out great later in the season, but if trading him nets a good player for right now, the trade is worth it. Not only that, but because he is a running back he has extra value. Many fantasy players are thin at running back right now, especially with Steven Jackson and Eddie Lacy down. By trading Gio to teams who need running back you can get an even better return on investment.

Look, this guy has major talent, and storing him on your bench is a solid move too. However, the most likely scenario is that he fails to score for the next three weeks or even longer. Then you will have no choice but to play the waiting game until he can get more carries. If you go for the trade now, you can sell high on him. If no good deals come of it, fine, he can stay on your bench and be a flex play during some bye weeks. However, if a good deal does come you can add a fantasy starter for the price of a bench player/flex play. Giovani Bernard’s value is sky high now, so don’t miss out.
