Tony Gonzalez has yet to give fantasy football owners much to cheer about in 2013. His 16-year resume is so impressive that Gonzalez was likely the second or third tight end selected in your draft. However, the Atlanta Falcons‘ red-zone target has yet to emerge as his 12 fantasy points this season rank him 16th among NFL tight ends. Now that’s not a statistic you see everyday!

Considering Gonzalez is coming off of a season with eight touchdowns and 930 yards receiving, it’s strange to see this Atlanta icon have just 69 yards receiving after two games. With that being said, Gonzalez owners got a bit of a kick in the rear this week when news broke that Falcons running back Steven Jackson will miss Sunday’s game and likely won’t suit up until after the team’s Week 6 bye.

Although Julio Jones currently leads Atlanta in touchdowns with two, Jackson was brought to town this off-season so that Matt Ryan had another option inside the 20-yard line. Naturally, Jackson’s absence opens the door for Gonzalez, who has caught at least five touchdowns every year since 2007. Week 3 should be a great opportunity for Gonzalez to shine as the Falcons’ tight end faces a Miami Dolphins‘ defense that was exploited by Jordan Cameron in Week 1 and embarrassed by Coby Fleener in Week 2.

Its safe to say that Gonzalez is far superior to those two youthful tight ends, so expect a big-time week from an otherwise slumping tight end.
