Cincinnati Bengals rookie running back Giovani Bernard had his coming out party last week on Monday Night Football at the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ expense. While he only touched the ball nine times, he made sure not to disappoint Fantasy Football owners as he had eight carries for 38 yards with a touchdown run an also had a reception for 27 yards and receiving touchdown.
This week, Bernard has more of a test in the Green Bay Packers. However, if he can get past the linebacker corps lead by Clay Matthews III, he could have an even better game this week. He was the first running back taken in April’s NFL Draft and it is likely he will live up to the hype and eventually outshine starter BenJarvis Green-Ellis sooner than later. While he is listed as probable for today’s game due to a hamstring injury, it is likely that will not have any effect on his style of running or his stats as if he gets more than 15 touches with the ball he could wind up with over 100 all-purpose yards and at least another touchdown.
While Bernard isn’t the biggest running back at 5-foot-9 and 202 pounds, that low center of gravity will provide him with greater balance and thus become harder to take down for defenses. All and all it should be interesting to see if he can break a big run at home against one if the league’s finest teams in the Packers led by Aaron Rodgers.
