Fantasy Football Q&A for Week 8

Fantasy Football Q and A for Week Eight

Week Eight
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Week 7 of the fantasy football season gave us more questions than almost any other week of the season thus far. With Reggie Wayne and Sam Bradford out for the season with injuries, many owners are scrambling to find players and answers to questions on who to pick up for these players or anyone else.

As always, many fantasy mangers have bye week questions again. In Week 8, there are a ton of teams on a bye and many of these teams have a great deal of impact players that will be missing from your lineups. Some of these players include Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte from the Chicago Bears. Others include running backs such as Chris Johnson, Danny Woodhead, Ryan Matthews, Trent Richardson, Ray Rice and Arian Foster. Quarterbacks like Philip Rivers and Andrew Luck will be missed by all of their owners. There are also key wide receivers missing this week like Keenan Allen, T.Y. Hilton and Andre Johnson.

These are the weeks in fantasy football that the true managers rise above the other managers in their respective leagues. I went out this week and asked many fantasy football managers what their biggest questions were going into Week Eight of the season. These managers were friends, relatives, strangers and one given and answered by me! To all of the people who asked these questions, I hope my answers were helpful and that it provides you the needed points or depth you will need to win your match-ups this weekend and for the weeks to follow. Now if you are ready, let’s get going with the questions.

Who is the better bye week pick up: Kerley, Givens, or LaFell? – Anthony

bye week pick up
Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports

Anthony, that’s a very tough question. I think Chris Givens has to be out of this conversation just because of the injury to Sam Bradford. This will hurt all of the receivers for the St. Louis Rams for the rest of the season. Jeremy Kerley had a nice game against the New England Patriots, but the New York Jets play a tough Cincinnati Bengals team that tends to shut down other teams’ offenses. That being said, Calvin Johnson did have a big game against them last weekend. However, I feel that Brandon LaFell is just the better matchup. Look Anthony, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a flat out mess right now and Carolina Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton has been on a roll. I would pick up LaFell because I think he has the better chance at the bigger game this week.

Should I trade Adrian Peterson? - Chris

Peterson
Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports

Wow, I never thought I would see or hear this question from any fantasy football manager, especially after the last fantasy season. My answer is yes, but only if you can get a really good deal out of it. If you are in need of depth or a quarterback, I would possibly try to push a tier two receiver with Adrian Peterson and get a running back like Frank Gore or a Matt Forte. I also think you can snatch up a good quarterback like Philip Rivers in that deal, as well. If you can add that kind of depth to your roster for essentially only one player, I would really consider pulling that deal off. I believe, and I think you do as well, that with the Minnesota Vikings being so bad, opposing teams will have to focus on Peterson alone and this will kill his numbers for the rest of the season.

With Owen Daniels injured, should I pick up Zach Miller? - Jay

Daniels
Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Jay, it has been reported that Zach Miller may be making his comeback this week against a struggling St. Louis Rams team. With Owen Daniels going down with an injury, you obviously have to pick up a new tight end. I believe Miller definitely has a shot to be a solid tight end play for the rest of the season, especially if that league is a very deep league. Just keep an eye out for any other big name tight ends that may break through during the rest of the season.

Will DeAngelo Williams still be valuable when Jonathan Stewart returns? - Pete

Williams
Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports

Oh Pete, I wish I had a crystal ball to see the future of this one for you, but if I had one of those then I’d be a richer man! Back to your question, with the return of Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams will definitely see a decrease in carries. However, don’t send Williams down river so quickly. Stewart has not played all season long and missed training camp. It will take Stewart a few games to get back into playing shape. However, to answer your question, I do believe that Williams will still have value when Stewart returns to the lineup.

Who Should I Start in Week 8? Ben Roethlisberger or Eli Manning? - Chuck

Manning
Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

I feel that this answer is an obvious one this week. The pick that I would go with is Eli Manning. The New York Giants won their first game on Monday Night Football this week and are taking on the very generous Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles have been giving up 20 points or more to teams, except for last weekend against the Dallas Cowboys. I feel that the Oakland Raiders are going to give the Pittsburgh Steelers a pretty good game this weekend, keeping the score tight. Go with Eli, Chuck! I think this is the best chance for your team to score points from the quarterback position.

Who is a Better Waiver Wire Addition: Mike James or Jarrett Boykin? - Snap

Boykin
Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Snap, this is a good question. If this is just for a flex play, I would definitely go with Jarrett Boykin over Mike James. Boykin is receiving passes from Aaron Rodgers and we know how much the Green Bay Packers like to throw the football. However, if you are in need of a person to play as your flex and looking for the person who should see the greater long-term play, I would go with James. Reports coming from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are that Doug Martin will miss significant time with his injury, meaning James will get the shot to be the number one guy for the Bucs. It’s your call, but if it is just a flex, again I would go with Boykin in Week 8.

Who is a Good Running Back to Pick Up For Week 8? - Danielle

Running back
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Oh Danielle, this is always one of the toughest questions and yet most asked question every week. It seems like no fantasy football manager is ever happy or has enough running backs on their roster. Since I already know Mike James was picked in our fantasy league by the person who is writing this (I can’t say, I’m sorry), I have a pretty good play for you in Week 8. I would go with New York Giants running back Peyton Hillis. He had over 80 yards of total offense and a touchdown. I feel that he is going to be a welcome addition to this offense going into Week 8, especially with all the problems the Giants have had at running back. Since the team won their first game with Hillis as their back, look for the Giants to not make a change going into their Week 8 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Should I Try to Trade A.J. Green to Better My Overall Roster? - Me

Green
Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

This is a question that I brought up to possibly help other fantasy owners of this man. Look, A.J. Green is one of the top players at his position and I feel that he is only second behind Calvin Johnson. However, if your team is having issues at running back, tight end or quarterback, then it may not be a terrible idea to trade him and pick up important pieces for your team to move closer to the playoffs. I am not saying trade Green for just average players, but if you can get a near top player for him plus another quality player, then I say go for it.
