This year, San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead has been a pleasant surprise, especially for owners who play in a league with a PPR format.
Woodhead started out the season slow, playing below a lot of people’s radar. He fills in nicely into the areas in the offense where Ryan Mathews struggles. The two backs are a nice compliment to each other and in the scheme used by head coach Mike McCoy.
Chances are pretty good that he’s already been snatched up in your league. If Woodhead is available, then I would absolutely take a stab at getting him. If you own Woodhead already and you are staring at a bye week hole in your running back corps, you might be tempted to start him in week 9.
So should you? This week, the Chargers face off against the Washington Redskins. Currently, the Redskins’ rushing defense is ranked 27th against the run, having surrendered 864 yards and 10 touchdowns to opposing running backs. Woodhead is also the Chargers’ passing down running back. The Redskins are currently ranked 23rd against the pass, having surrendered 15 touchdowns through the air.
This is a game where the Chargers’ offense is going to exploit the weak seams and edges that the Redskins leave exposed week in and week out. There might be better options out there if you aren’t playing in a PPR scoring system, but if you are, then I think you absolutely have to have Woodhead in this week.
