Darren Sproles: Is It Time to Drop Him In Fantasy?

Over the past two fantasy football seasons, if there has been any running back that is a dual threat out of the backfield, NFL and fantasy football experts say, “That player is a Darren Sproles-type player.” Since Sproles signed with the New Orleans Saints, he has been one of the most dangerous and coveted fantasy football running backs in the game.

This season has been very different, however. For some reason, the Saints just do not seem like they want to give Sproles any attempt to be the back that we all know he is and can be. Also, as luck would have it, Sproles was hit hard and has been diagnosed with a concussion during the first possession of the the Saints’ Week 9 contest.

This brings up a very important question: after this injury, is it finally time to drop Sproles?

This is a very difficult question to answer. If you have two starting running backs on your fantasy team and can play a wide receiver as a flex play then yes, drop him. Almost any receiver that gets consistent targets every week would be a better option than Sproles right now. If Sproles is one of your two starting running backs, than I think it is time to try and trade him on the low side. You may be able to get a receiver for him, especially from a team that needs a RB very badly.

Like many of you, I was one of those guys that drafted Darren Sproles and was expecting him to be a very nice piece of my fantasy team all season long. With the focus of the Saints’ running game more on Pierre Thomas than Sproles, and with his recent concussion, I think it is definitely time for you to consider getting rid of Sproles. Get what you can for him and hopefully it will work out better for you this way.
