2013 Fantasy Hockey: Don’t Give Up On G Tuukka Rask
Filling the shadow of G Tim Thomas with the Boston Bruins was supposedly going to be a pretty big task. The goaltender was selected to seven All-Star games, won two Vezina trophies, and even won the Stanley Cup with Boston in 2011.
However, Tuukka Rask has continued to make a name for himself in fantasy hockey circles. Last season, the Finnish netminder had a 19-10 record with a 2.00 Goals Against Average in 36 appearances. He proved to be one of the best goalies in all of fantasy and made Boston fans quickly cash in their Thomas jersey for a brand new #40 sweater.
This season has been a little tougher for the goaltender. Rask has a 7-4-1 record in 12 appearances and has seen several crooked numbers lately. He has now allowed 11 total goals over the last four starts to go along with an unimpressive 1-2-1 record. Fantasy owners are beginning to lose faith in their top goalie and some have even thought about benching Rask.
The team is currently 16th in the league in goals scored (2.7 goals/game) and aren’t giving their goalie a lot of help offensively. Rask is facing 30 shots a game each night and he is just being asked to do too much at the moment. Boston’s offense will eventually come around, and when they do, Rask will be warmed up.
Rask may not be playing like a number one fantasy goalie right now, but he will be very soon. Simply remain patient with him and make sure to keep him active at all times.
