2013 Fantasy Hockey: G Jean-Sebastien Giguere Still Has Value

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

The goaltending for the Colorado Avalanche has been absolutely untouchable this season. Semyon Varlamov is obviously the team’s starter and has an incredible 8-2-0 record, but backup G Jean-Sebastien Giguere has been deceptively useful for fantasy hockey fans this season as well.

Giguere currently had a 4-0-0 record for the Avs with a 0.75 GAA and 97.7% Save Percentage in four starts. He has even racked up two shutouts in limited time. Most fantasy owners wrote off the netminder at the beginning of the year and thought of him as another useless backup, but he is once again showing that he can still have value in deeper fantasy formats.

The 15-year pro is putting up ridiculous numbers this season, and despite his role as a backup, he has ironically outperformed his counterpart. Varlamov has had an awful 89.2% Save Percentage over his last five starts and the team’s number one option has let in 15 goals over that span. Now factor in Varlamov’s recent issues with the law, and Giguere could be closer to taking over the starting gig than people think.

Giguere may be 36 years old, but JSG can still have value in any league with over 10 owners. There is enough information out there to know which days he will start and which days he will sit, so don’t be afraid to use this super veteran for spot duty.
