There have been several defensemen that have really been racking up points this season for fantasy hockey fans. It seems that couple years ago that was just a handful of defenders in fantasy that would put up quality numbers, nowadays there is at least one stud defender on every team.

One of the offensive-minded defenders still on the waiver wire in a large number of leagues is D Kris Russell of the Calgary Flames. The 26-year-old has been on fire over the last week. The defender has five points in the last six games alone, including two goals and three helpers. The defenseman even added a game-winning goal this past week against the Chicago Blackhawks in overtime.

Russell has been leading the defense since D Mark Giordano went down with a lower body injury. Giordano was placed on IR early last month and the Flames’ captain could even be done for the year. This has opened the door for Russell to see much more ice time, and so far the veteran hasn’t disappointed with the extra shifts.

Russell is owned in under 45% of leagues at the moment and is a great defender to pickup at this point in the season. He will get plenty of minutes down the stretch and will be the new face of the team’s blueline during the power play. If he is still sitting on the wire in your league, make sure the add the defender this week.
