It’s taken a little longer than we expected, but Coby Fleener is finally starting to show signs of life in fantasy football. The Indianapolis Colts drafted Fleener last year to smooth Andrew Luck‘s transition into the NFL because the two played incredibly well together in college. He didn’t end up making much of an impact in his rookie season, but he’s beginning to steadily improve in his second year, benefiting greatly from the extra playing time he’s getting because of the injury to teammate and fellow tight end Dwayne Allen.
Fleener has just 37 catches for 439 yards and three touchdowns this season, but he’s starting to heat up. Just last week, he posted single-game career-highs in receptions and yards with eight for 107. Reggie Wayne‘s season-ending injury a few weeks ago has opened the door for him to pick up an expanded role, and he looks like he’s ready to step into it.
The Colts take on the Arizona Cardinals this week, presenting Fleener with a great opportunity to build on last week’s strong outing. Despite having one of the better defenses in the league, the Cardinals have been giving up a ton of fantasy points to tight ends all season long.
Not only that, but it doesn’t seem like Luck is going to have better options to throw to this week anyway. T.Y. Hilton will likely be shadowed by Patrick Peterson for most of the game, and Darrius Heyward-Bey is inept for the most part.
Fleener has a strong chance to be Luck’s favorite target this week and to put up some big numbers. If you own him, make sure he’s in your lineup. He’s starting to break out, and you don’t want him sitting on your bench when that first huge game happens. It’s right around the corner, so make sure you’re ready for it.
