Waiver Wire: Is Benny Cunningham A Good Pickup?

Cunningham

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

The running back position is one of the most important positions for every fantasy football team. When you have a star fantasy football running back, the last thing you want to hear is that he went down with an injury.

In Week 12, every manager of Zac Stacy was thrilled with the game that he was having against the Chicago Bears; Stacy had 12 carries for 87 yards. Then, something that every fantasy manager fears, happened — his managers got word that Stacy suffered a concussion and would not return to the game. This will possibly cause many fantasy football managers to lose their matchup this week.

If you own Stacy, then you probably know that his replacement did not do a bad job. Benny Cunningham came into the game and had himself a very nice afternoon. Cunningham carried the ball 13 times for 109 yards and a touchdown.

This was a great day, and if you are looking to pick up a running back to try to get your team into the playoffs, this is exactly what you want to see. However, is Cunningham worth the waiver wire bid going into a very important Week 13?

The answer for me is no. If Cunningham gives you anything, it will be just for next week, and that is it. If you look at the matchup that the St. Louis Rams have in Week 13, it is terrible for Cunningham or any Rams’ running back. The Rams will take on the very good San Francisco 49ers run defense. I do not recommend many starting running backs to be in your lineup when they take on the 49ers, let alone a guy who is coming in to replace someone because of injury.

Again, if you need to pick him up because you have Stacy and you need someone to take his place, by all means, do it. However, if you are looking to pick up a running back that will help you get into your leagues playoffs, I highly doubt that Cunningham would be that guy you are looking for to get that done.
