Fantasy Football Week 13: Bench Cecil Shorts

If only Cecil Shorts played on a good team with a good quarterback. The Jacksonville Jaguars wideout has made a name for himself over the past year, popping up on the fantasy radar last season and continuing to somewhat impress this season as well. He has 58 receptions for 700 yards despite playing injured for part of it and with a terrible quarterback for all of it.

It’s fun to think about what kind of numbers he could post if he had a Drew Brees or a Peyton Manning throwing to him, but unfortunately we might never find out.

Shorts has the honour of catching passes from the one and only Chad Henne every Sunday, making him a prime candidate to do nothing special on a weekly basis. And nothing special is what he does, blue-collaring his way to WR3 numbers every seven days. For fantasy purposes, it’s not that bad because you know what you’re getting with him, but unfortunately you also know what you’re not getting at the same time.

This week, Shorts’ fantasy owners need to lower their already-mediocre expectations as he’ll likely draw shadow coverage from Joe Haden, a stud of all studs these days. Aside from Antonio Brown last week, Haden has barely allowed anything at all to the wideouts he’s covered this season. He’s a nightmare to deal with in man-coverage, and there’s no way that Shorts is going to get the better of him more than once or twice, even with MVP-candidate Henne slinging it to him.

Make sure you’ve got Shorts riding the pine this week.
