Fantasy Football: Kirk Cousins Strong Start In Week 16

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

Kirk Cousins made his first start of the season in Week 15, and will finish out the rest of the season as the Washington Redskins‘ starting quarterback while Robert Griffin III takes a seat on the bench. Cousins is an above average talent who is certainly capable of being a starting quarterback in the NFL, and if he cleans up his decision-making against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 16 he should be able to have a monster day for fantasy owners.

Cousins had flashes of brilliance on Sunday, particularly his touchdown throw to Fred Davis in the first quarter, his perfect 60-yard bomb to Aldrick Robinson in the second quarter and his 50-yard touchdown to Pierre Garcon in the second quarter. When Cousins threw the touchdown to Fred Davis he had a safer, underneath receiver wide open but showed the willingness and ability to make the more difficult throw; he set up his bomb to Robinson with play-action and then threw a perfect 50-yard strike to hit the receiver right in stride. On the deep throw to Garcon the receiver ran a stop-and-go route and Cousins timed a pump fake right for when Garcon made his hesitation move which froze the defender, allowing Garcon to get behind the defense, and Cousins once again delivered a perfect deep throw.

Cousins finished Week 15 with 29 completions on 45 pass attempts for 381 yards to go along with three touchdowns, two interceptions, one fumble and 21 fantasy points. In Week 16, Cousins takes on a Cowboys team that is the worst in the NFL at defending the pass. They have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks in 2013, the second most passing touchdowns and they are giving up a league worst 297 passing yards per game. The Redskins should have no issues moving the ball against the Cowboys this weekend, and as long as Cousins can clean up his decision-making — like his interception from his own goal line last week — then he should have no problem filling up the box score.
