2014 Fantasy Football Keeper Profile: RB Eddie Lacy

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

As we look back at the start of the 2013 fantasy football season, it is hard to imagine why anyone would think that Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy was every considered to be a bust. The rookie showed up to camp a little overweight and some self-proclaimed experts took it as a sign that the back wouldn’t be a viable fantasy back in his first year. However, Lacy has since completely shed his bust label like those unneeded pounds at the beginning of the year.

In 14 games this season, the second round pick racked up an impressive 1,112 rushing yards on 263 carries (4.2 YPC). He added 10 rushing touchdowns and the rookie fumbled the ball just one time. He also received 20 carries or more in nine different contests. He has emerged as the team’s workhorse out of the backfield and it is something that the team has been missing since the time of Ahman Green.

Lacy also proved to be a very productive receiver as well in his first season. The rookie hauled in 33 balls this year for 242 yards and he has hauled in over four balls or more in four different contests. He may not be as dynamic as Jamaal Charles, but Lacy can still add an extra dimension to Green Bay’s offense.

Lacy is an extremely strong downhill runner, but his physical style of running took a toll on his body at times this season. Lacy missed time in the beginning of the season with a concussion, and as it stands right now, it looks as if he will also miss this week’s season finale with an ankle injury. The multiple injuries will put Lacy’s durability somewhat in question heading into next season unfortunately, and it will be something to monitor in seasons to come. He is definitely a fantasy monster, but  he doesn’t come without a little risk.

Lacy will be a top-10 pick in most fantasy formats next season and he will be drafted especially high in dynasty leagues. So if you can get your hands on him as a keeper now, this may be the last time he is on the market.
