Fantasy Baseball: Top 30 Third Baseman Heading Into Spring Training

a
Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Like first base, fantasy GMs can focus on the run-producing categories when it comes to third base, and you can afford to draft a guy who helps little, if at all, in the stolen base department. In the last three seasons, third baseman have accounted for just 760 of the 9,201 stolen bases in MLB (8.26 percent) -- compared to 20.98 percent of runs scored, 22.92 percent of runs batted in and 21.6 percent of all home runs. In order to be successful in 2014, you want to draft a third baseman who contributes positively in runs, home runs and RBI. If you end up with a guy who doesn't get a whole lot of steals, it should be pretty easy to make up for that shortcoming through another position.

There aren't too many surprises among the top 30 third baseman, but you'll probably notice that Jedd Gyorko fails to rank within the top 15 despite being the second-ranked second baseman. On the other hand, Matt Carpenter ranks nicely among third baseman despite being ranked 10th among second baseman. This really speaks to the lack of power at second base more than anything else. Gyorko's power potential sets him apart from almost every second baseman; among third baseman though, there are five guys projected to hit more deep bombs than him and 15 of the top 30 third baseman are projected to hit at least 20 homers (compared to just four of the top 30 second baseman). If you draft Gyorko with the intentions of using him at second base, it's rather easy to make up for his deficiencies through other positions, third base included. It becomes more difficult though if you draft him to play third base.
