Fantasy Football 2014 Breakout Player: No. 6 Ryan Tannehill

Tannehill

The quarterback position is one of those positions in fantasy football that many people have different opinions on. Many people want to spend a high-draft pick on players like Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. This is a great strategy because they are the top players at their positions and usually put up big numbers every week. Then there are the fantasy managers who like to take risks on lower guys such as Ben Roethlisberger or Tony Romo. Both of these players are Pro Bowl players and can also put up monster weeks for their owners. For my No. 6 pick of fantasy players to break out in 2014, I am going with a quarterback in Ryan Tannehill.

In the 2012 NFL Draft, there were two quarterbacks everyone was talking about going into it. Those players were Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. Everyone knew that these two players would be taken one and two in the draft. However, there was a question about the other quarterbacks in the draft. Ryan Tannehill was taken with the No. 8 pick by the Miami Dolphins, and they have been looking for a consistent starting quarterback since Dan Marino retired before the 2000 season.

Since being drafted, Tannehill still has not gotten the attention that RGIII or Luck as gotten. In 2013, Tannehill had the best season of his young career. He put up career-highs in touchdowns, completion percentage, quarterback rating and yards. Tannehill looked strong in many games, especially the game where his Dolphins defeated Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. He definitely looked a whole lot better than RGIII in 2013.

If you are a fantasy football manager, Tannehill has to be someone to consider taking in the draft this coming season. Many managers will think of taking Tannehill as a solid backup this season, but I ask why not consider him as your starter? Tannehill is only getting better, and if he puts in more work with players like Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Charles Clay, I have no doubt that Tannehill will be one of the biggest surprises of the 2014 NFL and fantasy football season.
