Preseason Top 200 Batters

a
Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to the top 200! Once every few weeks, leading up to the start of the 2014 MLB season, I'll be posting rankings for hitters, pitchers and an overall top 250. What is in front of you now is my first edition of the top 200 hitters. These are strictly going to be rankings, but if you're looking for projections, links to my projections can be found on the very last slide.

Before you dive right into the ranks, I've found that they're much more helpful if you know exactly how they're developed.

First, we start with a projection. I have gone through and developed a projection for every single statistically significant major league player (for hitters, the total was 239 players, and if you want to learn more about the projection process, I explained it in minor detail in my catcher projections). In fantasy baseball, for the most part, all we're concerned about with batters are the five standard roto categories (runs, home runs, RBIs, steals and batting average). So after I finish my projections, I find the projected league averages for all five of those categories. After I get those averages, I compare how a player is going to do relative to those means and then using a standard deviation, I can get a number that represents how much value that player presents over the mean for each category. After I get a value for all five categories, I add them together and that gives me a player's overall projected value using standard fantasy scoring.

For example, I have projected Miguel Cabrera to hit 39 home runs in 2014. To figure out what his value is in the home run category, I take his 39 and then subtract the league average (which is 16.4862), which tells me he's projected to hit just over 22 home runs over the league average. Next, I take that difference and divide it by the categories standard deviation, which tells me that Cabrera is projected to be 2.89 (with a really long decimal) standard deviations over the league average for home runs. In essence, it shows us his projected value in that category.

After a total value is given to each player, they are sorted in descending order, and that is exactly how they are ranked. Because these rankings compare all hitters against each other evenly, they do not take position eligibility into account whatsoever. The purpose of these are to compare hitters based purely on production, regardless of what position they play.
