Following a concussion-marred 2013 season, Denver Broncos receiver Wes Welker has been denying questions asking if he will retire after this season. There is a chance that he will consider retiring more seriously when he becomes a free agent in 2015. Considering that he is planning on playing next season, what exactly is Welker’s fantasy football value?
For many years, Welker has been considered to be one of the NFL‘s premier slot receivers , a position that has transformed into one of great importance over the last few years. This past season, Welker has shown the fantasy world that even though he has Peyton Manning throwing him the ball, he is not as effective as he was when he was known as Tom Brady’s favorite target.
In terms of standard scoring fantasy points, Welker has steadily declined each year since his arrival in Denver. That could be attributed to the fact that there are so many mouths to feed in the Broncos’ offense. Each receiver on the team will see their fantasy numbers take hits at some points in the season.
Since his arrival in Denver, Welker has seen his reception yardage drop, but his touchdown count increased to a career-high 10 touchdowns in 2013. In terms of assessing his value to fantasy owners in 2014, take note that his value in Denver is clearly built around his ability to score touchdowns. As a fantasy owner, you should not value a 33-year-old touchdown-dependent slot receiver.
Fantasy owners shouldn’t consider drafting him at all, and instead let him be some other owner’s headache in 2014.
