2014 Fantasy Baseball: David Ortiz Will Have 30 HRs & 100 RBIs

In fantasy baseball lineups, the designated hitter position is rarely reserved for an actual DH. Most fantasy owners start an extra outfielder in the spot, because most designated hitters around the game are simply too inconsistent to start on a week-to-week basis.

However, Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz continues to be the one exception to the rule. Ortiz manages to be a weekly fantasy contributor from the DH spot year after year, and while it limits him positionally, it has not put a ceiling on his fantasy numbers.

Ortiz hasn’t shown any signs of a power reduction, either. He has hit at least 26 home runs in 12 consecutive seasons, including an astonishing 38 dingers last season in just 137 games. Ortiz remains one of the only players left in the game that has the potential to hit 40-plus home runs this year.

If you are staring to think Big Papi is about to ride off into the sunset, think again. He has stated that he wants to sign a one-year extension so he can play in Beantwon through the 2015 season at least. There are obviously concerns about his health, as he has missed 97 games over the last two years alone, but Ortiz is one of the best power-hitters in baseball when healthy.

Ortiz will obviously miss some time again this year with a couple nagging injuries, but make no doubt about it, he will be a hitting machine when he is in the lineup. Look for Big Papi to hit another 30-plus homers and drive in another 100-plus runs in 2014.
