2014 Fantasy Baseball Profile: OF Starling Marte

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

After winning the 2013 National League MVP, Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen will obviously be a top-five pick in every fantasy baseball format this spring. The speedy centerfielder has earned his spot as a OF1 and is easily one of the most exciting players to watch in baseball.

Along with McCutchen, though, Pittsburgh also has a young, dynamic outfielder in Starling Marte.

After a non-existent 2012 campaign, Marte burst onto the scene last fantasy season. The 25-year-old walked into the lineup at the beginning of the year and never looked back. He ended with a respectable .280 batting average, but Marte’s pure value comes from the entangles.

The second-year stick hit 12 homers last year to go along with 26 doubles and 10 triples. He looked like a veteran in the box. Marte boasted an incredible .343 On Base Percentage and become the ideal leadoff hitter in the Steel City.

Marte is also very productive on the basepath. He stole 41 bases last year and perfected the art of getting into scoring position for McCutchen. Marte’s speed allowed his to score 83 runs and the outfielder showed that he has the potential to average between 90-100 runs a year in the fast-paced offense.

Marte will hit double-digit home runs this year and he should have no problem swiping another 40-plus bags. He will be one of the best second outfielders to target this spring.
