Preseason Top 300
Baseball season is less than a month away which means your fantasy baseball draft is likely right around the corner. In front of you now are my top 300 players heading into 2014. These rankings are mathematically based and they should serve as a guide as you assemble your virtual roster.
In order to determine the rankings, the first thing I do is create a projection for each player for the upcoming season. After all of the projections are finished, each player is given an overall value score (I like to think of it as the fantasy version of WAR). To get this score, I look at how each player is going to perform in each standard roto category (runs, home runs, RBI, batting average and steals for batters; wins, strikeouts, ERA, WHIP and saves for pitchers) comparatively to the league average.
For example, I have Miguel Cabrera projected to hit 39 home runs this season and I have projected the league average for home runs to be just over 16 with a standard deviation of just under eight. Cabrera is projected to hit 23 home runs over the league average and when I take that difference and divide it by the standard deviation, it gives him a positive value of 2.81 in the home run category. After I get a score for each category I add them all up and that gives me an overall value score for each player; the players are the overall scores are then sorted from highest to lowest and that is how the players are ranked.
When determining value for pitchers, it's important to note that a pitcher who is projected to have an ERA of 3.00 while pitching 200 innings is going to have more value in the ERA category than a pitcher projected to have an ERA of 3.00 while pitching 65 innings (starters carry much more weight in ratios than closers do). I have accounted for this in the rankings and ratios are weighted by the number of innings a pitcher is projected to pitch.
Another thing I need to point out is that these rankings do not take position into account whatsoever, they rank players solely on projected performance. Robinson Cano ranks just outside my top 20 with a projected value score of 5.2082, but that doesn't necessarily mean he should be drafted outside the top 20. Adam Jones ranks ahead of Cano with a projected value score of 5.7458; on draft day, you're going to need to determine what's more valuable to you: an outfielder with a score of 5.7458, or a second baseman with a score of 5.2082. Many people, myself included, would likely go with the second baseman.
One of the obvious illustrations in these rankings is the marginal value of closers. My highest ranked closer is Craig Kimbrel of the Atlanta Braves and he's ranked 125th overall. Along with Kimbrel, only five closers project to have a positive overall value score. This just reinforces the idea that you should not be reaching for closers at all on draft day, and when it's all said and done, all you should really care about when it comes to closers are their potential to get saves -- they pitch so few innings that they really just don't have much of an effect on any other category.

Preseason Top 300
Baseball season is less than a month away which means your fantasy baseball draft is likely right around the corner. In front of you now are my top 300 players heading into 2014. These rankings are mathematically based and they should serve as a guide as you assemble your virtual roster.
In order to determine the rankings, the first thing I do is create a projection for each player for the upcoming season. After all of the projections are finished, each player is given an overall value score (I like to think of it as the fantasy version of WAR). To get this score, I look at how each player is going to perform in each standard roto category (runs, home runs, RBI, batting average and steals for batters; wins, strikeouts, ERA, WHIP and saves for pitchers) comparatively to the league average.
For example, I have Miguel Cabrera projected to hit 39 home runs this season and I have projected the league average for home runs to be just over 16 with a standard deviation of just under eight. Cabrera is projected to hit 23 home runs over the league average and when I take that difference and divide it by the standard deviation, it gives him a positive value of 2.81 in the home run category. After I get a score for each category I add them all up and that gives me an overall value score for each player; the players are the overall scores are then sorted from highest to lowest and that is how the players are ranked.
When determining value for pitchers, it's important to note that a pitcher who is projected to have an ERA of 3.00 while pitching 200 innings is going to have more value in the ERA category than a pitcher projected to have an ERA of 3.00 while pitching 65 innings (starters carry much more weight in ratios than closers do). I have accounted for this in the rankings and ratios are weighted by the number of innings a pitcher is projected to pitch.
Another thing I need to point out is that these rankings do not take position into account whatsoever, they rank players solely on projected performance. Robinson Cano ranks just outside my top 20 with a projected value score of 5.2082, but that doesn't necessarily mean he should be drafted outside the top 20. Adam Jones ranks ahead of Cano with a projected value score of 5.7458; on draft day, you're going to need to determine what's more valuable to you: an outfielder with a score of 5.7458, or a second baseman with a score of 5.2082. Many people, myself included, would likely go with the second baseman.
One of the obvious illustrations in these rankings is the marginal value of closers. My highest ranked closer is Craig Kimbrel of the Atlanta Braves and he's ranked 125th overall. Along with Kimbrel, only five closers project to have a positive overall value score. This just reinforces the idea that you should not be reaching for closers at all on draft day, and when it's all said and done, all you should really care about when it comes to closers are their potential to get saves -- they pitch so few innings that they really just don't have much of an effect on any other category.
