MLS Fantasy 2014: Drafting Omar Gonzalez May Not Be Best Idea

Omar Gonzalez 2014 MLS Fantasy

Joe Nicholson – USA TODAY Sports

Omar Gonzalez is undoubtedly one of the best players in MLS. He was the first defender to be signed as a Designated Player and has recently become a constant in the U.S. National Team’s back four. Everything about Gonzalez makes you think he’d be the perfect defender for your team, but I would hold off on adding him to your team right now.

You are allotted six defenders, and if it fits your budget, why not pick the best ones? Gonzalez is one of the defenders that is known to score, usually from headers off a corner kick. Scoring defenders give you an extra point, which may add up besides all the points he gains from being a great defender.

Last season, he was the fifth-highest scoring defender. So, really he’s not the greatest choice for you fantasy team. He is one of the more expensive players and will cost you $10 million, which is just $.5 million less than forward Mike Magee. I think the money would be better spent on a forward than Gonzalez, especially considering that he will possibly be missing a good chunk of the season because of the World Cup.

Gonzalez is a great player overall, but he may not be a good idea this season. Maybe he’ll be worth a trade later on in the season after the World Cup, but I wouldn’t add him to your team just yet.
