There were quite a few talented QBs taken in the 2014 NFL Draft. A few of them may even be immediate starters on their respective NFL teams, but it doesn’t mean that those players will be viable starters on your fantasy team. Of the 2014 draft class of QBs, here are the five best options from a fantasy football perspective.

Honorable Mention: Jimmy Garoppolo

I wanted to mention the Eastern Illinois product Jimmy Garoppolo, drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round. Barring injury, there is absolutely zero chance of Garoppolo starting over Tom Brady this year. However, Brady will turn 37 in August. Even though Garoppolo likely won’t pay any dividends this year, he’s a very interesting hold in dynasty or keeper leagues if you have the roster spot.

5. Logan Thomas

The Arizona Cardinals drafted Logan Thomas out of Virginia Tech. Carson Palmer isn’t terrific, but I’m not sure Thomas is the answer. Though he is an athletic rarity at 6-foot-6 and 248-pounds, Thomas lacks accuracy and is prone to turnovers. I think he will back up Palmer for at least a few games and develop in 2014, and Thomas won’t be a great fantasy player even if he does start. Arizona may be better off using him as a tight end.

4. Derek Carr

The Oakland Raiders drafted Derek Carr out of Fresno State. Carr has a strong arm and good accuracy. However, he is often criticized for playing in a weak college conference, and many believe his talent is exaggerated by the spread offense to which he is accustomed. However, if Matt Schaub plays like he did last season, Carr has a good opportunity to be the starting QB and attempt to prove his doubters wrong.

3. Blake Bortles

I think that Blake Bortles will be the starting QB for the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1 rather than Chad Henne. Bortles’ 6-foot-5 frame and 232-pound body draws comparisons to Ben Roethlisberger, and he has good vision and arm strength. Though Bortles still has work to do on his footwork and mechanics, Toby Gerhart and fellow rookie Marqise Lee will help make things easier for him. Bortles could be a decent bye week QB depending on the matchup.

2. Johnny Manziel

Johnny Manziel will compete with Brian Hoyer to be the Cleveland Browns’ starting QB, and I believe he will easily win. Although he is overhyped, Manziel does have great accuracy from the pocket and is an elusive scrambler. If his talents can translate to the NFL, Cleveland has a strong offensive line and a good run game with Ben Tate there. Manziel would be No. 1 on this list if it weren’t for Josh Gordon facing a year-long suspension.

1. Teddy Bridgewater

The Minnesota Vikings traded for the last pick of the first round to snag Teddy Bridgewater, who is likely to start Week 1 over Matt Cassel barring any setbacks. What’s not to like? Defenses must first stop the Vikings’ fearsome ground game with Adrian Peterson, and Bridgewater will have a veteran WR in Greg Jennings as well as a dynamic weapon opposite him in Cordarrelle Patterson. Bridgewater has the potential to be an immediate fantasy stud.
