5 Shrewd Plays for May 30
For any fantasy team, starting the right players is unsurprisingly the key to success. This is especially true in the immensely popular daily leagues, where one player can mean the difference between a big payday and crushing disappointment. Based on matchups and talent, the following five players could all be in for an excellent day on May 30 and deserve your utmost consideration.
5. P - Josh Beckett: Los Angeles Dodgers
5. P - Josh Beckett: Los Angeles Dodgers
Even before his no-hitter on Sunday, Beckett was having a career resurrecting season. He's on pace for perhaps his best statistical year, and the wins should start piling up behind this powerful offense. Expect another solid effort from him today when he takes on the light-hitting Pittsburgh Pirates, who are scoring just 3.25 runs per game on the road this season.
4. 2B - Ian Kinsler: Detroit Tigers
4. 2B - Ian Kinsler: Detroit Tigers
The Tigers must be thrilled with their big offseason trade acquisition. Not only has Kinsler exceeded expectations this season, but the guy they traded away for him is out for the rest of the year (Prince Fielder). Expect continued success today from the red-hot second baseman when Detroit faces the Seattle Mariners. Kinsler owns a career .400 average with three HRs against projected starter Hisashi Iwakuma.
3. C - Brian McCann: New York Yankees
3. C - Brian McCann: New York Yankees
This backstop has under-performed a bit with a .225 average, but he's still providing a decent amount of power and RBIs for the Yankees. His matchup today is spectacular, so I like his chances of improving those stats. He'll be facing the terrible Ricky Nolasco tonight, and not only does he sport an atrocious 6.12 ERA, but McCann has a lifetime .345 average off of him in 58 at bats, including a whopping eight HRs.
2. OF - Nelson Cruz: Baltimore Orioles
2. OF - Nelson Cruz: Baltimore Orioles
Cruz is the No. 2 overall player on ESPN's player rater, which isn't bad for a guy many teams passed on during the offseason. He's tearing the cover off the ball in May with a .330 average and 12 HRs, and he's likely to continue rolling today. He faces lefty starter Brett Oberholtzer this evening, and not only does he own a lofty 5.32 ERA, but Cruz is hitting .394 off left-handed pitching this year.
1. OF - Carlos Gomez: Milwaukee Brewers
1. OF - Carlos Gomez: Milwaukee Brewers
Few hitters are as hot as this guy right now, as Gomez is hitting a spectacular .459 with two HRs and nine RBIs in his last nine games. He's having an MVP caliber season so far, and it looks like he truly is the real deal. The center fielder could be in for another big game tonight when the Brewers host the Chicago Cubs. Projected starter Travis Wood has been awful on the road this season with a 6.59 ERA in five outings.
